Gobustan is a mountainous area located in the Gobustan settlement of Garadagh district, 65 kilometers from Baku, at the foothills of the Great Caucasus Mountains.

Rock paintings in the area are among the rare historical relics of human culture. Gobustan rock paintings have been studied since 1947. There are human, animal images, various signs, marks, rainwater, etc. on the rock. images were discovered. Among these paintings, the one that attracts the most attention is the “Yalli” dance scene of people dancing arm in arm. These dances cover the 8th and 4th millenniums before our era according to their size and date. Gavaldash, which is considered an ancient musical instrument, scenes reminiscent of the “Yalli” dance depicted on the rocks indicate the spiritual world and art habits of ancient communities thousands of years ago.

“Gobustan” State Historical-Artistic Reserve (“Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape”) received “national” status in 2006. In 2007, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
